Scanning stopped but printing still works
That combination points at the computer rather than the scanner. Printing and scanning use separate paths, and a Windows update can quietly break the scanning one while printing carries on fine. Reinstalling the full driver package from Brother, rather than the basic print driver Windows installs by itself, fixes most of these. On a Mac, remove the printer under Printers and scanners and add it back, which re-registers the scanner alongside it.
