The printer won't accept a cartridge
Take it out and look at the contacts. Orange protective tape left on a new cartridge causes this constantly, and so does a fingerprint on the gold contact pad. Wipe the contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, never a wet one, and push the cartridge back in until it clicks. If the printer names a third-party or refilled cartridge as not recognised, that's usually the chip being rejected rather than a genuine fault, and firmware updates have been known to tighten that check. A genuine cartridge will tell you within a minute which one you're dealing with.
