Smudges and smears on the page

If the marks appear on the back or along the edges, ink has got onto the rollers, and most Canon models have a bottom plate cleaning routine in the maintenance menu for exactly this. Run it a couple of times. If the smearing is in the printed area itself, you're probably printing at a photo setting on plain paper so the ink has nowhere to go, or the paper is slightly damp.
