0x97 and 0xF1 — internal hardware fault
These are internal hardware errors, usually pointing at the mainboard or the print head, and they tend to arrive out of nowhere and lock the printer. One thing worth clearing up: 0x97 is not the ink pad message, and the two get confused constantly. The ink pad warning is a maintenance counter, while this is genuine hardware. Unplug the printer from the wall for five minutes, remove any jammed paper, reseat the cartridges, and power it back up. If the code returns straight away, it's a repair, and on a budget model the quote often costs more than a replacement.
